Breaking: Apple Reports Record $111.2 Billion Quarter, But Candidly Admits Mac Supply Constraints Could Last Months

Apple Inc. shattered revenue records Thursday, posting $111.2 billion for the March quarter — a 17% year-over-year surge. Yet outgoing CEO Tim Cook conceded the company is struggling to build enough Macs, particularly the new MacBook Neo, to meet what he described as 'off the charts' demand.

'We under-called the level of enthusiasm,' Cook said during an earnings call, referring to the MacBook Neo. 'Customers are flocking to it, and we simply cannot make units fast enough.'

MacBook Neo Becomes a Breakout Hit

The inexpensive laptop, which many analysts called the 'iPhone moment for the Mac,' drove a March quarter record for first-time Mac buyers. One flagship customer: Kansas City Public Schools, which is moving all high school students from Windows and Chromebooks to MacBook Neos, completing its transition to an all-Apple district.

CFO Kevan Parekh added that the iPhone 17 family 'is now the most popular line-up in our history,' further boosting revenue across all product categories.

Background: Chips, Leadership, and Soaring Demand

The supply crunch stems from Apple's reliance on advanced semiconductor nodes for its M-series and A-series chips. 'The majority of our supply constraints will be on several Mac models given the continued high levels of demand,' Cook explained. He expects 'several months' to restore supply-demand balance.

Demand for Mac mini and Mac Studio has also surged as customers use them for AI and agentic AI workloads. 'Customers recognize the power of those systems to run AI,' Cook noted. The shortage hits both Macs and iPhones, but Cook said the Mac side is most acute.

On the leadership front — Cook is handing the CEO reins to John Ternus — the outgoing chief noted the company has 'the right leader ready to step in.' Ternus called this 'the most exciting time in my 25-year career at Apple.'

What This Means

For consumers and enterprises, delays in MacBook Neo, Mac mini, and Mac Studio shipments are likely to persist into the summer. Analysts warn that businesses planning large-scale Mac deployments may face longer lead times than usual.

For investors, Apple's record revenue underscores the strength of its ecosystem — installed base hit 2.5 billion devices — but supply constraints could cap near-term growth. The company still reported double-digit growth in Greater China and Asia-Pacific, with China revenue up 28% for the quarter.

The AI angle adds a new dimension: Apple is positioning its Macs as AI workhorses, and the chip shortage risks ceding mindshare to PC rivals. As Cook put it, 'We think we have the right products to be the workstation for the AI era — but we need to build them.'
