Rivian R2 Configurator Goes Live Early: Performance Trim Priced at $57,990, Undercuts Tesla Model Y
Rivian R2 Configurator Launches Ahead of Schedule
Rivian has unexpectedly opened the online configurator for its highly anticipated R2 mid-size electric SUV, allowing reservation holders to configure and price their vehicles months before initial delivery estimates. The move comes weeks ahead of the previously communicated June launch timeline, a development that underscores growing confidence at the automaker's Normal, Illinois assembly plant.

The Performance trim starts at $57,990, placing it just below Tesla's Model Y Performance at $58,880 — a deliberate pricing strategy, according to industry analysts. "Rivian is signaling it can compete head-to-head on value while maintaining its off-road capability heritage," said Dr. Elena Marchetti, automotive analyst at Electrify Research.
Reservation holders can now access the configurator via Rivian's website, with base trim pricing for the R2 starting at $45,000 before federal tax credits. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2026, but early configurator access lets buyers lock in pricing and delivery slots sooner.
Background: A Make-or-Break Model
The R2 is considered Rivian's most critical vehicle to date — a smaller, more affordable SUV designed to broaden its appeal beyond the luxury R1T and R1S. The company's survival depends on ramping production of this model to achieve economies of scale and positive cash flow.
Rivian's Normal factory, which currently produces the R1 line and a commercial van for Amazon, is undergoing retooling to accommodate R2 assembly. The early configurator launch suggests those efforts are on track, if not ahead of schedule. Mark Benson, supply chain expert at Michigan-based AutoInsight, noted: "An early configurator launch typically signals confidence in the tooling and supply chain — a positive surprise for investors."
Pricing & Options at a Glance
The R2 configurator offers three powertrain configurations: Standard (dual-motor, 250+ miles range), Dual-Motor Performance (315+ miles, 0-60 in 3.5 seconds), and a yet-unannounced Tri-Motor variant. Standard trim includes 20-inch wheels, a panoramic glass roof, and full off-road capability (air suspension, skid plates).
- Standard: from $45,000
- Dual-Motor Performance: from $57,990
- Tri-Motor: pricing TBD (expected above $70,000)
Optional packages include an Adventure Package with a spare tire, roof rack, and upgraded camping gear ($3,500), and an Autonomous+ Package with enhanced driver assistance ($5,000). Configurator screenshots obtained by Automotive News confirm color options like Biarritz Blue and Forrest Green, plus a 22-inch sport wheel upgrade.

What This Means: Undercutting Tesla and Proving Execution
By launching ahead of schedule, Rivian gains a critical marketing advantage over the Model Y, its primary competitor. The $890 price gap on the Performance trim may narrow further if federal tax incentives apply — Rivian vehicles built in Normal currently qualify for the full $7,500 credit, while Tesla's Model Y Performance may lose eligibility due to battery sourcing rules in 2025.
"This is about more than pricing; it's about earning consumer confidence in Rivian's ability to deliver," said James T. Harlow, portfolio manager at GreenTech Capital. "An early configurator launch reduces uncertainty for buyers and signals that the company's production delays are behind it."
The move could also pressure Tesla to adjust Model Y pricing or accelerate its rumored refresh. Rivian's stock rose 4.2% in after-hours trading following the announcement.
Reservation holders are advised to configure promptly, as early deliveries will be prioritized by timestamp of finalized configuration. Rivian expects to produce 150,000 R2 units annually by 2027, according to its investor day presentation.
Looking Ahead
First customer deliveries of the R2 remain expected in early 2026, with test drives available at Rivian's flagship stores starting late 2025. The configurator also hints at a future R2X extreme off-road variant, though no pricing has been released. For now, the race to dominate the $50,000-$60,000 electric SUV segment has officially begun.
