Apple May Introduce Fresh MacBook Neo Colors to Offset Rising Costs

Apple is reportedly weighing a fresh approach to its popular MacBook Neo lineup: introducing new color options to soften the impact of a potential price increase. According to a recent report from Taiwan-based tech columnist and former Bloomberg reporter Tim Culpan, the company faces mounting production costs that could force it to raise the entry-level laptop’s price. To keep customer enthusiasm high, Apple may rely on aesthetic refreshments rather than merely passing on the financial burden.

The Cost of Success: Scaling Up Production
The MacBook Neo’s runaway success has created a classic supply-and-demand predicament. Initially, Apple projected orders of 5 to 6 million units, but demand quickly outstripped those estimates. The company has now asked suppliers to prepare capacity for a whopping 10 million units of the debut model. This dramatic scale-up, however, comes with significant cost implications.
The A18 Pro Chip Dilemma
To meet the doubled production target, Apple needs a fresh batch of A18 Pro chips — the same system-on-chip used in the iPhone 16 Pro. Early production runs relied on “binned” chips with minor defects, which Apple repurposed by disabling one of the six GPU cores. Those chips were sourced from TSMC’s N3E process at least two years ago, and the stockpile is now exhausted. Unfortunately, TSMC currently has no spare 3nm capacity to allocate, as AI demand is soaking up the available output. This means any new production run will use fully functional, top-tier chips at a higher per-unit cost — plus a premium for expedited manufacturing.
Rising DRAM Prices Add Pressure
Further compounding the issue, DRAM prices have climbed sharply since the MacBook Neo first went on sale, driven largely by AI data center build-outs. This has pushed the laptop’s bill of materials even higher, leaving Apple with fewer margins to absorb without adjusting the retail price.
New Colors as a Strategic Buffer
As a countermeasure, Apple is considering adding new finishes to the MacBook Neo lineup. The current palette — Citrus, Blush, Indigo, and Silver — has been well-received, but expanding the color options could reignite consumer excitement if prices rise. Culpan’s report suggests that Apple hasn’t settled on any specific shades yet, and no names have leaked. The idea is that a fresh look can make the laptop feel new and worth the extra cost, much like how iPhone color updates have historically driven upgrade cycles.

Supply Chain Challenges
The production ramp has not been without operational hurdles. Shipping estimates on Apple’s website currently show waits of two to three weeks across the MacBook Neo lineup in the US and many other countries. Manufacturers Quanta and Foxconn are racing to fill orders from factories in Vietnam and China. While Apple has not publicly confirmed a price hike, Culpan notes that raising the Neo’s price remains an option not ruled out by the company.
What This Means for Buyers
For prospective MacBook Neo buyers, the possibility of a price increase looms, but the introduction of new colors could provide a silver lining. Whether Apple ultimately decides to absorb the costs or pass them on, the laptop’s runaway popularity underscores a delicate balance: scaling production to meet demand while keeping the product accessible and appealing. In the coming months, consumers may see a more colorful — and possibly more expensive — MacBook Neo lineup.
